Bio
Sofía Forero is a Colombian-born dancer, choreographer, producer, and educator renowned for her ability to use movement as a powerful medium to explore human connection, culture, and storytelling. Born and raised in Cali, Colombia, she began her dance training at Escuela de Danza Petipa, where she performed in prestigious venues such as Teatro Mayor - Julio Mario Santo Domingo and participated in festivals including the International Ballet Festival of Cuba.
She continued her studies at the Joffrey Ballet School and graduated with Honors from The Ailey School, where she developed a versatile foundation in ballet, modern, and contemporary dance techniques. Throughout her career, she has had the privilege of performing works by legendary choreographers including Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, Alvin Ailey, Rena Butler, Earl Mosley, and Darrel Moultrie. She is currently a company dancer with Pajarillo Pinta’o Dance Company, Tumbaga Dance Company, and Ajkun Ballet Theatre, where she performs as a Senior Artist.
Forero specializes in Classical Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, and Salsa dancing, with additional training in Jazz, Latin American Folk Dance—Bachata, Cumbia, Merengue—Modern Partnering, Musical Theater, Pas de Deux, Pointe, Russian Character Dance, Street Jazz, West African, GYROKINESIS®, GYROTONIC®, and Zena Rommett Floor-Barre®.
Forero's contributions to the arts have been recognized with awards such as the Rauschenberg Dancer Grant and the Cultural Solidarity Fund Grant. As a choreographer, Sofía founded The Heraclitus Project in 2018, an initiative dedicated to presenting thought-provoking and dialogue-inspiring works. Her choreographic works have been showcased in renowned venues such as Sony Music Hall (Times Square), Dixon Place, Davenport Theater (Off-Broadway), Union City PAC, Hudson Guild Theater, Dance On The Lawn Festival, Hudson Valley Festival, and Greenpoint Gallery. She has received commissions from prestigious organizations including the American Swiss Ballet Company, New York Foundation for the Arts, Arts On Site, Works On Water, AVA Gallery, Spoke The Hub, in New York, and Théâtre Antoine Watteau in France. Most recently, she co-created and produced Mosaïque, an interdisciplinary performance blending dance, music, and visual art, which premiered and toured in Paris in 2024.
Parallel to her choreography work, Sofía’s teaching career has flourished, encompassing a wide range of disciplines. She has taught students from ages 3 to 80, adapting her approach to suit diverse learners. Her expertise spans Classical Ballet, Contemporary and Modern techniques, Latin rhythms, as well as GYROTONIC® and Zena Rommett Floor-Barre®. Beyond her educational work in the studio, Sofía has also extended her knowledge into therapeutic realms, working with Alzheimer’s patients through movement as part of a collaborative initiative with CaringKind and ID Studio Theater in New York. As a Teaching Artist, she is currently working with renowned organizations such as Ballet Hispánico, Accent Dance NYC, and the YMCA, engaging with communities from all walks of life. Her international teaching experience includes leading masterclasses throughout the United States and in Colombia, where her dance journey began. Sofía has also shared her expertise through lectures on "Creativity in Dance and Choreography" to creative teams at Snapchat in Silicon Valley and the multinational advertising company DDB. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes empowering individuals of all ages through movement, fostering physical, emotional, and creative development, and building meaningful connections across diverse cultures and communities.
As an author, Forero penned “Una Danza Para El Cambio Social”, a research book that documents a healing technique she developed using movement and dance to serve underserved communities in Colombia. This work underscores her profound belief in the transformative power of dance as a tool for connection, healing, and cultural change.
